Everyone knows you need money to start up a small business. What is more important than the actual money is the organization involved in working with that money. You can have all the money in the world, but if you don't have your finances organized, you'll waste money and resources along the way. It's not hard to organize your finances, but sometimes it falls out of priority.
You must be extremely organized when it comes to your bills. Unexpected expenses are what kill small businesses so you need to keep track of your bills. First of all, it may sound simplistic, but keep all of your bills in one place. When you get the mail, take care to put the bills in a specific place so both you and others know where they are at all times. If you misplace a bill, you can easily inadvertently forget to budget it in, and therefore incur late fees or misuse your budget all together. Also, schedule out when you pay your bills so you know exactly when you need to take care of it. It depends on the quantity of bills you receive, but you should be able to set up one or two times a month when you take care of your bills. If you do this, the routine itself will help you stay on top of your bills.
Keep track of your credit card accounts by diligently reading the statements and checking on all costs associated with that credit card. Also, make keep track of your interest rates by reading your statements, because sometimes your bank will raise your interest rate right in front of you. Also take note of transaction fees. If your interest rate does jump on you, and you incur too many transaction fees, consider switching accounts. Also, take advantage of automatic payments. You can often pay credit card bills automatically by deducting straight from your account to the credit card company.
The checkbook can be daunting, especially if you've gone a considerable amount of time without balancing it. You may find it easier to get a software program that helps you computerize your checkbook, and helps balance and keep track of your expenses more efficiently. Another way to help yourself avoid trouble with balancing your checkbook is to get overdraft protection. That way if something is overlooked along the way, you'll be protected from annoying fees.
Don't scatter your money in many different accounts. Cancel any accounts that are virtually unused or also carry a low balance. Sometimes it is nice to have certain accounts associated with certain expenses, but sometimes having your money scattered can lead to organization issues. So try to consolidate any accounts you can and eliminate the ones that are not necessary. Also, establish an automatic savings program to help you consistently save your money.
