There are many different kinds of successful businesses and successful business leaders. Some successful business leaders build a company from the ground up, some take small businesses and bring them to the top, and some business leaders take over a large business and make them successful or keep them successful. There are certainly many different ways a business leader can be successful, but more often than not each successful business leader has a great deal in common.
First of all, successful business leaders need to have confidence. This means having confidence in themselves, but also their business, their product, and the people to work with them. A successful business leader's confidence cannot be just internal, it has to be portrayed in such a way to rub off on other people around them. A business leader needs to help the employees and the customer to feel confidence. It's not just a matter of talking confidently; a leader needs to act confidently as well. You need to lead by example, and not just by giving motivational speeches before the start of each day. Successful business leaders also need to be good decision makers. That doesn’t necessarily mean quick decision makers, although they do need to be able to be quick. Most importantly it means they know what it takes and what they must do in order to make a good decision. That involves the proper insight and knowledge of the business, the field, and of the issue at hand. A good decision maker will make the decision in an efficient manner, and then act on that decision.
Taking the initiative once the decision is made is perhaps the most important part of the decision itself for a successful business leader. It's one thing to just make the decision, but from there on out the leader must back that decision completely and make the right moves along the way to put that decision into proper effect. Another aspect of a successful leader is the ability to see the progress through to the future. They don't need a crystal ball, but they do need to have a sense of where they're going and where they would like to be as a business. This involves planning and practicality, but you also need vision and creativity. A successful business leader can picture the company on a path, with certain stops that must be made along the way. It's almost like a thorough itinerary for a trip to be made for the business into the future, and the leader must both be able to map out that trip, but also have the ability to bring the right people along for the ride.
